Foundation for Santa Barbara City College Announces Million Dollar Pledge

The Coeta and Donald Barker Foundation To Provide Substantial Scholarships for Culinary Students

The Foundation for Santa Barbara City College received a pledge of $1 million from the Coeta and Donald Barker Foundation to provide scholarships for culinary students over the next ten years. This pledged gift will ensure that current and future students in this highly successful and specialized program will be helped financially with their training.

The Coeta and Donald Barker Foundation was founded in 1977 by Donald and Coeta Barker, longtime residents of Santa Barbara and Rancho Mirage, CA. Ms. Barker served on the Santa Barbara City College Foundation board, as well as on the boards of the College of the Desert in Rancho Mirage and the Rancho Mirage Public Library. Ms. Barker was a member of the Eisenhower Medical Center Auxiliary, Thunderbird Country Club and Birnam Wood Golf Club. Mrs. Barker was chairwoman of her family's charitable Foundation until she passed away in August 2005. The Coeta and Donald Barker Foundation is now administered by a board of trustees, including Santa Barbara resident Dana Newquist.

The Culinary Arts program at Santa Barbara City College turns out some of the finest personal and corporate chefs in the region and in the country. Chad Steven's, proprietor of Chad's on Chapala in Santa Barbara is a graduate of the program, as is Virginia Dalbeck, a runner up on the national 'reality' television show, "Hell's Kitchen." The College's School of Culinary Arts and Hotel Management Program develops skills and competencies for positions in the hospitality industry. The program mirrors industry standards by providing training in a realistic work environment, providing food in the campus' cafeteria, its JSB café and the John Dunn Gourmet Dining Room.
