Foundation for SBCC Dedicates the Henry Bagish Overlook
A Serene and Inspiring Testament to a Beloved Instructor
The public is invited to the dedication of the Henry Bagish Overlook on Thursday, September 27, 2007 at 2:30 p.m. on the West Campus of Santa Barbara City College. This beautifully designed outdoor site is named for the late Professor Henry Bagish, who was an inspirational instructor in the social sciences for a record 50 years at Santa Barbara City College. (Hired in 1951, his tenure predates the re-location of SBCC from downtown to its current clifftop location).
Join President John Romo, members of the Santa Barbara Community College District Board of Trustees and of the Foundation for Santa Barbara City College for this tribute to a man who inspired thousands of students. Mr. Bagish was known for bringing excitement into his anthropology and sociology teachings by drawing on many adventuresome research sabbaticals he took with his family into many of the world's exotic corners and trouble spots, including war zones from Mexico to Pakistan.
Bagish’s children, former SBCC President Peter MacDougall and many faculty members, past and present, will be present at the dedication.
The Bagish Overlook is a newly landscaped public gathering site located on West Campus adjacent to the Great Meadow. This beautiful site, with seating and a fountain is a lasting gift that Henry and his wife, Fran, made to our campus through their estates. It was designed by George W. Girvin and Associates, and features large, flat stones collected by Professor Bagish from his worldwide treks.
Throughout his long career Henry and his wife, Frances, supported dozens of initiatives at SBCC, including a spectrum of scholarships, the CARE single-parent program, capital campaigns, adult education, the Nursing Program, and the Luria Library. Following his 2001 retirement, Henry and Frances endowed a scholarship in the Social Sciences for re-entry students to provide an annual $2,500 award. Henry passed away in 2004, and his wife, Frances passed away in 2005.
This beautiful tribute is funded by the Bagish family through The Foundation for SBCC, a nonprofit organization which supports the students, programs and facilities at the College.
