Thanksgiving Dinner Giveaway for Single-Parent Students at Santa Barbara City College

“The Makings” for a Full Dinner will be Distributed to Over 175 Families on Wednesday, 11/21

On Wednesday, November 21, from 9:30 am until 1:00 pm on the SBCC campus, the provisions for more than 170 Thanksgiving dinners will be distributed to students who are single parents pursuing their education. These students are a part of EOPS (Extended Opportunities Programs and Services), a program which provides educational support services designed for the full-time, low-income, single parent population at SBCC. The groceries will be distributed by the EOPS program staff at the Winslow Maxwell Overlook on the east campus.

The Foundation for SBCC, a non-profit fundraising organization which supports the College, initiated the Thanksgiving Dinner Giveaway Fund to provide a Thanksgiving dinner for each of the single-parent families enrolled at the college. This annual fundraiser asks donors to ‘chip in’ for the makings of a Thanksgiving dinner, in an effort to eliminate one more financial burden for parents trying to pursue a college education.

Over 120 donors have contributed to the fund this year, resulting in just over $8,000 dollars.  Local grocers, including Trader Joe’s, Scolari’s, and Jordano’s contribute to this event with donated and/or discounted groceries. Extra funds collected, if any, support EOPS initiatives throughout the year, such as: assistance with childcare expenses, text books, school supplies, academic counseling and personal development courses specifically designed for single parents.

The EOPS program at SBCC helps single parents improve their lives and become self-sufficient through higher education. Whether they are returning to college, or may not have aspired to attend college but are looking to improve their lives and opportunities, these students receive the support they need to focus on their studies and take care of their children.
