Priscilla Butler, PhD has been teaching ESL for more than 20 years, and has served on numerous committees at Santa Barbara City College including Planning and Resources, the Partnership for Student Success, the College Planning Council, and the Academic Senate. She was elected to serve as Academic Senate president from 2016-2018.
Priscilla earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and her PhD in TESOL from New York University. Prior to coming to SBCC in 2007, she taught at several Silicon Valley community colleges and lived and worked in Japan for more than six years.
Born and raised in San Jose, California, Priscilla has a love of the West Coast and has always made her way back to it. At SBCC, she has found a home among other dedicated faculty, staff, and administrators who are proud of the education that SBCC provides and who believe in the power of education to transform lives. The words of one of her favorite writers, bell hooks, reflect her philosophy about education: “Education as the practice of freedom becomes not a force which fragments or separates, but one that brings us closer, expanding our definitions of home and community.”
