Sergio A. Lagunas was born in Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico, and he was raised in Oxnard, California. He enrolled at Oxnard College, where he participated in various clubs, worked as a writing tutor and a student ambassador, and he also served as president of his student government. He later transferred to UC Santa Barbara to complete a B.A. in English and a minor in Education. After graduating from UCSB, he worked at Oxnard College for student activities and at El Concilio Family Services as the U.S. Citizenship course instructor.

Sergio then attended and graduated from Sacramento State with an M.A. in Higher Education Leadership. While in Sacramento, he worked as an advisor for Cal-SOAP and a student services assistant for Los Rios Community College District. Sergio has worked in non-profit organizations, community colleges, and most recently at UC Santa Barbara as a financial aid advisor. As an advisor for the UCSB office of financial aid and scholarships, he coordinated outreach, and advised promise scholars, transfer students, and non-traditional students.
