The Foundation is as committed as ever to supporting SBCC students as they prepare for careers, transfer to four-year universities, and pursue lifelong learning goals. With this in mind, the Foundation offered one-time emergency grants starting on March 30, 2020 to current SBCC students who were experiencing financial emergencies as a result of the current COVID-19 pandemic. The SBCC Foundation’s COVID-19 Emergency Grant program is now closed. Additional emergency grant resources for students are being explored, please check back soon.

The Foundation provided $2.3 million in COVID-19 Student Emergency Grants to students.
These one-time grants of up to $1,000 per student helped to cover housing, food, child care, and other essential items, including the technology and internet access necessary for students to continue their education remotely.

California is committed to assisting workers affected by COVID-19. Read below for resources that may pertain to your situation.
Are You Sick or Quarantined?
If you are unable to work because you have or have been exposed to COVID-19 (certified by a medical professional), you can file a Disability Insurance (DI) claim. Governor Newsom’s executive order waives the one-week unpaid waiting period. You can collect DI benefits for the first week you are out of work. If you are eligible, the EDD processes and issues payments within a few weeks of receiving a claim.
Have You Been Laid Off?
If you have lost your job or have had your hours reduced for reasons related to COVID-19, please visit https://edd.ca.gov/Unemployment/Filing_a_Claim.htm
Are You Caring for Someone Who is Sick?
If you are unable to work because you are caring for an ill or quarantined family member with COVID-19 (certified by a medical professional), you can file a Paid Family Leave (PFL) claim. If you are eligible, the EDD processes and issues payments within a few weeks of receiving a claim.
Are You Affected by School Closures?
Parents of children that have to miss work due to school closures may be eligible for Unemployment Insurance benefits. Eligibility considerations include if you have no other care options and if you are unable to continue working your normal hours remotely. File an Unemployment Insurance claim and EDD representatives will decide if you are eligible.
