Kylie Merkovich says she’s grateful for SBCC’s technical education programs and that she made the decision to pursue certificates of achievement in the Interior Design, Drafting/CAD, and Construction Technology programs.

Q&A with Kylie:

What are some of your favorite classes or teachers at SBCC?
I love my classes, especially the CAD classes taught by Armando del Cid! I learn so much and really feel capable of achieving a lot in this field, thanks to his teaching style and encouragement. He drives his students toward excellence, in his hallmark stoic manner.

What do you plan to do after you graduate?
My ultimate goal is to become a developer! I’ve always loved design and viewing different types of homes.

After earning my certificates, I’m excited about combining all three of areas of knowledge to achieve my goals, in combination with my work experience in estimation and design project management”, Kylie said.

In 2024, you received a scholarship from the Rotary Club of Montecito in partnership with the SBCC Foundation. How did this help you in pursuing your educational goals?
I was honored to be nominated by Armando Del Cid and the Design Department to receive the Rotary Club of Montecito Scholarship. My educational background was anything but conventional and to be acknowledged for my efforts was incredibly encouraging and meaningful. Not only did this help financially, but emotionally and mentally this was a further confirmation of being on the path that I am meant to be. I really can’t say enough how thankful I am.

How would you describe your experience at SBCC?
I appreciate the overall ease in the whole experience; enrolling, registering, getting to and from my classes. I feel very comfortable attending classes. I have also formed unexpected connections with my teachers and classmates — it’s been lovely feeling more connected to my community in this way. I should also note that as an adult learner, who struggled in school as a young person, it’s been the best experience in a school setting I’ve experienced.

Anything else you would like to share about your interests, background, or education?
I can’t even count how many times my mom told me to clean my room before bed, but somehow, I’d end up rearranging furniture and shifting things around until 1 or 2 in the morning. While I’m sure it gave her a headache at times, it was a glimpse into the path I was meant to take. I’m so grateful that this drive within me only grew stronger over time. My first jobs were as a caregiver, working with families in different homes, which exposed me to a wide range of interiors and lifestyles. I was immersed in my true passion without even realizing it. Sitting here today, all I can say is, trust the journey, and trust that you’re being guided. I’m excited for what the future holds and the incredible things I hope to create.

I have loved the experience of continued education and I know that if it wasn’t for SBCC I would not be on this trajectory with my personal/professional goals. From the bottom of my heart, thank you!
